Philadelphia Film Festival 2026: What to Know

Thirty-five years is long enough that a festival stops being an event and starts being an institution. The Philadelphia Film Festival hits that mark this year, running October 15 to 25, 2026, and it's been doing this longer than most people reading this have been going to the movies, the Philadelphia Film Society has run it every year since the early '90s, and it's been an October fixture specifically since 2009, when the festival moved off its old spring dates for good.

What that longevity buys you is scale most film festivals don't have. Eleven days, dozens of world, U.S., and Philadelphia premieres, and screenings running across the Philadelphia Film Society's three Center City theaters, anchored by the Film Society Center at 1412 Chestnut Street. It's not a festival you sample with one ticket, people build entire weekends around it, moving between theaters a few blocks apart.

Why Center City specifically comes down to the same thing that makes any festival like this work: you need theaters close enough together that someone can catch a 4 p.m. screening and still make an 8 p.m. one without driving anywhere. Three venues within walking distance of each other, all a short walk from the Avenue of the Arts, is what makes an eleven-day, multi-screening-a-day festival actually functional instead of exhausting.

This is also just the latest entry in what's become a real fall pattern for Philadelphia arts and culture. The Fringe Festival wrapped its run at the end of September, and the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show had its fall weekend a few weeks before that, between the three, Center City runs almost two straight months of overlapping arts programming from mid-September into late October.

There's no ticket strategy here worth overcomplicating: badges and passes go on sale ahead of the festival for people who want to build out a real slate, and individual tickets are available closer to the date for anyone who just wants to catch one or two films. Either way, eleven days is enough time to actually plan around, which is more than most festivals give you.

If you're looking to make a weekend of it downtown, KG's Neighborhood Guide covers more of what's actually a short walk from Center City before or after a screening.
